Car Sales vs Technology

A recent article is blaming the Internet as the cause for a decline in auto sales in the teens and twenties market. I don’t believe technology and the latest gadgets are to blame for the decline in auto sales. You can’t compare something like an iPad that costs around $600 to a car that can costs at minimum $10,000. You check out this site and compare car prices at Kelley Blue Book

The latest recession and loss of jobs should be to blame for the decline in auto sales. If the economy would be in a better state and people would feel like they have more job stability then maybe they would be more willing to invest in something as expensive as a car. But in the meantime, I think people would much rather worry about being able to feed their family than about having the latest car. And as for the teens and twenties, this generation is now more focused on worrying about getting a job and getting through school that cars are no longer a need. In cities like New York a car is not a necessity. Being a car owner is becoming more of a luxury than a necessity in my opinion.

  1. Your second paragraph brings up a great issue: public transportation. Fact is, most cities in the US do a terrible job with public transportation. The only exceptions I can think of are Chicago and NYC.

And I completely agree with you that the economy is mainly to blame for this. But I also see how the internet and social media play a role. I'm interested in seeing how the trend continues.

  2. I also agree that the economy is to blame for the decrease in car sales. Not only for young adults but also for Americans of all ages, it is a luxury to purchase a car in this unstable economy. You never know when you will lose your job now days. Buying a car is a big risk with a couple of years of monthly payments and increasing gas prices. With other ways of transportation and staying together and keeping in touch with friends and family, electronic gadgets are a more attainable option for many young adults.

  3. I agree with everything you said in your post. The economy is definitely the reason automobile sales have declined. People are worried about keeping their jobs, making sure their houses don't go into foreclosure, and putting food on the table. They simply can't afford a car in this current economic landscape. Comparing a one time purchase such as a $600 Iphone to an $15,000 car is absolutely ridiculous.

  4. Its true, a lot of the younger generation are losing jobs to the older ones. Where young people would usually have part time jobs at publix or wal-mart, many older people are still working so they have to compete for jobs. Since there is little stability in the economy, many of the younger generation are less focused on buying an expensive item that they or their family cannot afford at the moment. I am sure that within the next decade car sales will increase.
